You ever feel like the ground is shifting right under your feet? One minute you’re a king in your castle, the next the walls are crumbling and you’re not sure which way is up.
You ever feel like the ground is shifting right under your feet? One minute you’re a king in your castle, the next the walls are crumbling and you’re not sure which way is up. That’s the exact picture my guest, Hollywood titan Bryan H. Shepard, painted for me—a world he dominated for 36 years now being “decimated,” leaving his friends and colleagues shattered. But it was the secret he kept for decades that holds the key for the rest of us on how to stand firm when everything else falls apart.
I’ve spent years talking to folks who’ve been through the fire—soldiers, hustlers, and entrepreneurs who’ve seen their worlds turned upside down. But the conversation I had with Bryan H. Shepard hit different. Here’s a guy with four Emmys on his shelf, who’s worked with everyone from Tom Cruise to George Clooney, telling me he’s watching his industry get dismantled brick by brick.
He shared that he’d just gotten word a show he was part of for 32 years was getting the axe. He’s bracing himself to watch another wave of talented people lose their homes, their identities, and their hope. It’s a gritty, painful reality. So I had to ask the question we’re all thinking when our own walls start to shake: How do you keep your head up when the spotlight shifts?
His answer wasn’t about networking or learning a new skill. It was deeper. It was about what he calls “Spiritual Sovereignty.”
See, for most of his career, Bryan was winning in the most visual industry on the planet with a secret: he only has vision in one eye. Instead of letting it be a crutch, he turned to an unlikely mentor: the bald eagle. He told me, “The eagle can see the other side of the mountain. We can only see the front.”
Man, that landed. How many of us are staring at a mountain in our life—debt, burnout, a broken relationship, a career that feels like a dead end—and we think it’s impossible to climb? We’re stuck looking at the rock face, but God’s perspective, the eagle’s perspective, sees the whole picture. It sees the path around it that we can’t.
Bryan’s journey was about cultivating that internal vision. He learned not to tie his identity to the “physical form”—the awards, the job title, the house, the car. Because all that can be taken away. Your boss can fire you. The economy can crash. But as Bryan put it, echoing the story of Nelson Mandela, nobody can touch who you are spiritually.
The biggest threat to our sovereignty isn’t always an outside force. Sometimes, we’re our own worst enemy. Bryan said, “Your sovereignty can be taken away by yourself. You can put yourself in a mental prison.”
That’s the urban truth right there. We lock ourselves up with fear, with shame, with the lie that our best days are behind us. Bryan’s book, Eagle Spirit for Sovereignty, is his roadmap out of that prison. It’s about learning from the resilience of nature to find our own.
This isn’t just a Hollywood story. This is a human story. It’s for every burnout warrior feeling depleted, every hope-seeker looking for a sign. The world will always be changing, but your spirit, your core, your soul—that’s the one thing you have true ownership of.
